Catalog of the Solo Exhibition of Jernej Forbici
Jernej Forbici, acclaimed Slovenian artist and creative director of ART STAYS, returns from PUNTO SULL’ARTE for AURI SACRA FAMES, a three-day event where he will present a new cycle of paintings focused on the theme of the climate crisis, featuring the use of gold leaf, a novelty in his artistic language. The artist will be present throughout the duration of the event, which serves as an unmissable opportunity to explore this new development in his work.
The VERNISSAGE will be held on THURSDAY, JANUARY 25, from 5 PM to 7 PM at the main location of the Gallery on Viale Sant’Antonio 59/61 in Varese (Casbeno).
Auri Sacra Fames, a pejorative expression abbreviated from “Quid non mortalia pectora cogis, auri sacra fames,” translates and interprets that cursed hunger for gold that seduces and ensnares modern man to the point of total loss of self-control over his future and the environment. An important title chosen by the artist Jernej Forbici, previously used for a site-specific installation of the exhibition Welcome to the Final Show in 2018, created for PUNTO SULL’ARTE and now reintroduced for this new exhibition in Varese.
After a brief pause and spending the last few months in the studio following the latest international events, including negotiations and reflections on the recently reached agreement in Dubai for a transition from fossil fuels, the artist presents the health of the planet with his traditional and personal pictorial language made of colors, shapes, and improbable, metaphorical new materials in dialogue: gold and oil (one of the three fossil fuels, indeed). On the occasion of the international commitment of COP28, an economic interest – auri sacra fames – emerged, unavoidable with a plan different from what was initially expected, consisting, according to some of the involved countries, of improper trade agreements representing a serious violation of the commitment made towards climate change, aimed at the goal of zero emissions.
