PUNTO SULL’ARTE is delighted to present HORITZÓ, a two-person exhibition featuring Catalan artists TOMÀS SUNYOL and JOAN PERIS. The OPENING RECEPTION will be held on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31, from 11 AM to 1 PM, at the main gallery at Viale Sant’Antonio 59/61, Varese. The paintings on view have been created specifically for the exhibition. Tomàs Sunyol, travelling from Spain, will be exceptionally present for the opening.

Horitzó brings together the artistic practices of Tomàs Sunyol and Joan Peris around a shared reflection on landscape as an experience of perception. The exhibition’s title evokes the horizon not as a mere line delimiting space, but as an unstable threshold between the visible and the invisible, between light, colour, and distance. Through distinct yet complementary approaches, both artists move beyond description to focus on the very conditions through which things come into view.

In Sunyol’s painting, the city is progressively stripped of its descriptive dimension. Architecture, façades, and openings are transformed into volumes, intervals, and fields of light. Light becomes a structural element of the image, while the painterly gesture generates surfaces and textures, as seen in works such as Simfonia en gorc, Tendresa, and Fes-ho amb amor. Peris, by contrast, leads the landscape towards a more essential dimension. Expansive, textured fields evoke sky and sea, while the city’s profile is reduced to an almost imperceptible line. In works such as Horitzó Ain, Horitzó Alcanar, and Horitzó Moncofa, the horizon suspends the stability of space and transforms distance into the very substance of painting.

Although their perspectives differ, both artists share an exploration of the boundary between figuration and abstraction, where recognition gradually gives way to perception. The Mediterranean light present in both bodies of work does not function as a geographical reference, but rather as a principle through which space takes shape.

Horitzó thus invites the viewer to slow down the gaze and to consider landscape not as something to be recognised, but as an experience to be traversed: a space in which presence and absence, matter and light, the visible and the invisible remain in a state of constant balance.

The exhibition will be on view through December 19, 2026.

JOAN PERIS, born in 1965 in Castellón, Spain, is a multidisciplinary visual artist. Throughout his career he has explored disciplines such as painting, photography, digital art and sculpture, with a work marked by experimentation with materials and the fusion of diverse elements. His pieces, highly textured and rich in contrast, reflect his dedication to expanding the limits of artistic expression. His beginnings date back to the 80s and 90s, when he studied graphic design, photography and ceramics, a solid foundation that allowed  him to develop a unique approach to art. For over a decade he worked as a ceramic designer, a period that consolidated his sensitivity to materials and forms, and which would later influence his visual work. In the midnineties he discovered his passion for painting and opened his first studio in Barcelona, a city that would become the ideal setting for his creative activities. Over time, he began to exhibit in international galleries and fairs, gaining recognition both locally and internationally. His first paintings, influenced by his ceramic past, were distinguished by their emphasis on matter and texture, establishing the foundations of his style. In the early 2000s, Peris began a new stage marked by photography and digital art, combining both disciplines with painting to create innovative works that blur the boundaries between realism and abstraction. This integration allowed him to expand the possibilities of his art and open up new creative paths. Currently, Joan Peris collaborates with galleries in Barcelona, Girona and Mallorca, as well as in Belgium and the Netherlands. He lives and works in Barcellona (ES).

TOMÀS SUNYOL was born in 1964 in Dieulefit, France, where his family had settled after leaving Catalonia to escape the political climate of the time. After spending the early years of his childhood in Provence, he returned with his family to their hometown of Badalona, where he studied at the Pau Gargallo School of Illustration. The son of a painter and nephew of a painter, Sunyol developed a strong interest in the visual arts from an early age and soon began exhibiting his work. His painting explores a fascinating balance between abstraction and reality, where detail extends beyond the boundaries of the visible. Shadow and colour give rise to compositions in which expressive force and poetry are held in a delicate equilibrium. Rather than being simply created on the palette, his colours seem to emerge from light itself; it is light, in turn, that defines space, deliberately resisting tonal transitions. His surfaces are fragmented and traversed by lines that are sometimes barely perceptible, as well as by dark openings that evoke subjects composed of houses pressed closely together, streets alternately shaded or sun-drenched, and an unseen humanity that nevertheless remains tangibly present. Throughout his artistic career, Sunyol has held numerous solo and group exhibitions and has participated in major art fairs across Europe, the United States, China and Japan. His works are held in private collections worldwide. He lives and works in Badalona (ES).
