Ottobre a Santa Maria by Matteo Massagrande
With October in Santa Maria, Matteo Massagrande leads us into an abandoned portico opening onto an autumnal garden. Light filters through the central opening, revealing trees in warm shades of yellow and orange, and a carpet of fallen leaves covering the lawn. A work that transforms silence into living memory. On view at PUNTO SULL’ARTE Gallery in Varese, as part of the group exhibition IN-LEAF.
The artist: Matteo Massagrande
Matteo Massagrande (Padua, 1959) is one of the leading figures of the new Italian figurative art movement. His paintings portray rooms and abandoned places inhabited by a single presence: light. A soft and suspended light that restores intensity to emptiness and transforms absence into essence. Active since 1973, he has exhibited in over one hundred solo shows in Italy and abroad, with works included in museums, churches, and prestigious collections, among them the Uffizi’s Prints and Drawings Cabinet. He lives and works between Padua and Hajòs (Hungary).
Description “Ottobre a Santa Maria”
The work depicts the outer portico of an abandoned house opening onto an autumnal landscape. Trees tint the scene with yellow and orange, while the lawn is entirely carpeted with fallen leaves. Light, the absolute protagonist, lends poetic intensity to the suspended space.
Conclusion
With Ottobre a Santa Maria, Massagrande engages with the theme of IN-LEAF, a collective exhibition celebrating autumn as a season of transformation and memory. On view at PUNTO SULL’ARTE Gallery in Varese, until October 25, 2025.
