Pao: Urban Art, Perception and the Transformation of Space

The transformation of everyday reality through perceptual and symbolic play lies at the core of the artistic research of Pao. His work emerges from the encounter between urban art, visual experimentation and pop culture, giving life to artworks capable of altering the way we perceive the space around us.

The Art ofPao

A distinctive element of his practice is the ability to intervene in urban space, transforming ordinary objects into unexpected and narrative presences. Iconic examples are the famous penguins painted on Milan’s traffic bollards, interventions that made his artistic language immediately recognizable and marked the beginning of a reflection on the relationship between perception, environment and imagination.

His theatrical training as a stage technician, sound engineer and set builder with the company of Franca Rame and Dario Fo, together with the experience gained in the workshops of the Teatro alla Scala, deeply influenced his artistic approach. The relationship between stage, space and perception became one of the fundamental elements of his visual language.

Starting in 2007, following his participation in the exhibition “Street Art Sweet Art” at the PAC – Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, his research expanded towards painting and three-dimensional supports. His attention progressively focused on the crisis of two-dimensionality and on the limits of traditional perspective representation.

Through curved surfaces, volumes and geometric distortions, Pao investigates the mechanisms of visual perception, challenging the idea of a fixed and objective space. His works move between urban interventions, painting, sculpture and artistic objects, always maintaining an immediate and accessible language that nevertheless introduces more complex perceptual reflections.
