Alessandro Papetti: Artist and Visual Researcher

Alessandro Papetti is an Italian artist born in Milan in 1958, known for his profound exploration of industrial archaeology and the human condition through painting. Active since the 1980s, he established himself early on as a distinctive voice within the landscape of contemporary Italian art.

Between 1988 and 1990, he created the cycle “Portraits Seen from Above”, which drew critical attention, notably through an article by Giovanni Testori in Corriere della Sera. During this period, Papetti began developing a wide-angle vision of reality, a perspective that would become a defining element of his artistic language.

The art of Alessandro Papetti

In the 1990s, Papetti evolved his research with the cycle “Relics”, focusing on the traces left by time in studios, factories, and industrial spaces. His works reveal a deep engagement with the dialogue between past and present, where memory accumulates within surfaces and architectural environments.

From 1992 onward, he intensified his investigation into industrial archaeology, culminating in an exhibition at the Civic Museums of Villa Manzoni in Lecco in 1996. In the new millennium, he introduced the cycle “Water”, depicting figures suspended in swimming pools or immersed in dark seas, exploring the relationship between humanity and environment, between body and space.

The “Shipyards” series became another central theme: industrial ports, ships, and metal structures are transformed into powerful visual scenarios where painting conveys monumentality and introspection.

Papetti has participated in major exhibitions such as The Discomfort of Painting (2005) and The Belly of the City (2006). His participation in the Venice Art Biennale in 2011 and the exhibition at the Museum of Architecture in Moscow in 2012 further strengthened his international recognition.

His art merges tradition and innovation, addressing contemporary themes with a personal and analytical gaze, capable of transforming industrial space into emotional experience and existential reflection.
