Matteo Pugliese: A contemporary sculptor of strength, resistance and rebirth
Discover the powerful sculptures of Matteo Pugliese, one of the most internationally acclaimed Italian contemporary artists. His figures emerge from imaginary walls, struggle against the surfaces that hold them back, and embody strength, resilience, and the desire for rebirth.
Among his most iconic series:
Extra Moenia – Male figures that appear to break through the walls from which they emerge. Tense, tormented, and powerful bodies—symbols of inner struggle and liberation.
The Guardians – Characters reminiscent of ancient warriors—samurai, Assyrians, or Native Americans. Not fighters, but spiritual protectors who guide and defend.
The art of Matteo Pugliese
Pugliese’s work plays with the relationship between the human body and architectural space. His figures are never simply placed in an environment: they push, break through, and emerge. The wall becomes a living material—a boundary to overcome, a threshold between inner life and the external world.
His sculptures, created primarily in bronze, terracotta, and aluminum, combine sculptural strength, refined elegance, and a compelling narrative quality.
Through recurring themes of resistance, transformation, and identity, Pugliese creates works that express a universal and deeply emotional language.
