Rudy Pulcinelli | Anomalia

Rudy Pulcinelli’s works focus on the idea of dialogue and individual as a unit of measurement of the potential value of mankind: in the contemporary babel of people and ethnic groups dramatically consumed by internal struggles, where human lives are often not taken into consideration, by using the symbolism and the letters of the 7 most widespread alphabets in the world, the artist tries to connect the concept of communication with the one of memory which together play an important role in laying the foundations for his sculptural-installation language. Pulcinelli creates this by using the symbolism and letter silhouettes of the 7 most widespread alphabets in the world: Greek, Cyrillic, Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese, Latin and Thai. The use of language in his works is aimed at a deeper reflection that arises from a simple consideration: everyone as a child, before starting assimilating a language, is able to communicate with people coming from different part of the world, regardless  their origins. Learning a language leads to building a barrier that involves constraints and prohibitions. The contrast between the importance of school education and what it entails is here very clear. Essential and characteristic elements of his production are the full and empty, the volumes and absences that give movement to his sculptures. This succession is aimed at accentuating how every element, despite seem to be entirely positive and necessary, inevitably brings with it shortages and lacks.

Florence and Prato’s University present a production by CSA “Centro Sperimentale dell’Audiovisivo”, (video directed by Paolo Benvenuti, shooting and editing by Gabriele Masi), this short video entitled “Anomalia”, will guide you to a virtual tour of Rudy Pulcinelli’s studio and will make you discover his artistic tools, some curiosities about his works, the concept of his artistic practice and a short biography to learn more about him.

Rudy Pulcinelli usually prefers to use steel in two different ways: painted with lacquered white that makes his sculptures even more graceful and corten, a particular technique that leads steel to oxidize. The period required for this process is variable, as it is determined by weather phenomena, but, on average, it takes about 30/40 days in which nature must do its part and take over the work of art. Another important theme in his work, which is very present in the world of contemporary art, is that of Resilience. From a psychological point of view this term indicates our psychological ability to deal with pain, trauma and difficulties, trying to recover our inner balance and reorganizing the structure of our personality without alienating from one’s own identity.
